European stocks are mostly lower despite an upbeat lead from US stocks on Friday

  • Eurostoxx -0.17%
  • Germany's DAX -0.40%
  • France's CAC 40 -0.20%
  • UK's FTSE -0.16%
  • Italy's FTSE MIB -0.09%
  • Spain's IBEX +0.09%

A soggy start to the week in Europe on the equities front. Not really following the mood from most of Asia and the US (last Friday).

The laggards in Asia were Chinese stocks and the Hang Seng (which reversed 1% gains at one point on the day) index - but they were lower as investors got a bit worried about China's deleveraging efforts possibly driving up borrowing costs, and in turn hurt economic growth a little. This of course came after last Friday's data which showed a deceleration in China's credit growth - with M2 money supply growth hitting a record low.

Apart from that, the Nikkei, Kospi, Australia's ASX 200 and other stock indices in Asia were mostly positive on the day. Quite a different story so far in Europe though.
