Japanese inflation data for April (national) and May (Tokyo) was out earlier, link is here for the data

Bloomberg note that today's inflation data is the last beforethe next Bank of Japan meeting (June 15 & 16) (Though, note - there is more inflation data due later today ... Bank of Japan will publish their own CPI measure ... but to be fair the BOJ already have it)

and add today's data:

  • will intensify pressure on the Bank of Japan to consider further monetary stimulus after Kuroda disappointed the markets by taking no action at April's meeting

The FT has this (via Fast FT, gated):

  • Consumer prices in Japan retreated further in April, again calling into question the effectiveness of the Bank of Japan's recent experiment with negative interest rates.
  • With expectations June quarter GDP could be soft owing to the earthquakes that hit the southern island of Kyushu in April and have disrupted supply chains, the pressure on policymakers to support the economy grows.
