Chairman of the Commons Brexit Committee Hilary Benn speaking this morning 23 Oct

He told the BBC's The Andrew Marr Show:

"I think that it is right and proper that Parliament should, first of all, have a chance to express a view about what our negotiating objectives are going to be."

He added that it was "essential" that Brexit minister David Davis tell Parliament what his negotiating objectives are.

Benn was a prominent Remain campaigner and on Wednesday was elected chair of the new parliamentary committee that will scrutinise government policy on the UK's exit from the EU.

Speaking before elected Benn said his pro-EU views did not mean he would seek to obstruct the exit process.

"Parliament has a job to scrutinise the process of our withdrawal from the European Union. I campaigned for remain, but I accept the referendum result.

Following his victory, Benn said leaving the EU would be "the most complex process since the end of the second world war".

It is not going to be sufficient for [ministers] to keep saying they are not giving a running commentary. There is no more important challenge facing the country and parliament than making the best of the decision that the British people have made,"

The pound might initially find a little support on Benn's comments today adding more fuel to the Brexit parliamentary vote uncertainties.
