Japanese inflation data for April (national) and May (Tokyo)

National CPI y/y for April, -0.3% y/y

  • expected is -0.4%, prior was -0.1%

National CPI y/y excluding Fresh Food for April, -0.3% y/y

  • expected is -0.4%, prior was -0.3%

National CPI excluding Food, Energy y/y for April, +0.7% y/y

  • expected is 0.7%, prior was 0.7%

Tokyo CPI y/y for May, -0.5% y/y

  • expected is -0.5%, prior was -0.4% (Tokyo CPI data is available a month earlier than the National CPI)

Tokyo CPI excluding Fresh Food y/y for May, -0.5%

  • expected is -0.4%, prior was -0.3%

Tokyo CPI excluding Food, Energy y/y for May, +0.5%

  • expected is 0.6%, prior was 0.6%

I've bolded the "excluding Food, Energy" results (National and Tokyo) as it's the one that most resembles the 'core' inflation measure used in the US (for example). Its still a long way off the BOJ's target.

We'll get the Bank of Japan's own inflation measure for April released later today (at 0500GMT): expected 1.0%, prior 1.1%
