Popular French economy minister Macron resigns with an eye on the top job

The rumored resignation of French economy minister Emmanuel Macron came to fruition.

The 38-year-old recently created his own political movement called En Marche! outside his Socialist party. He was seen at one point as Hollande's protégé but with the President growing extremely unpopular, he abandoned ship.

Reports say that in his resignation speech he said he wanted "regain my freedom" and focus on building a "transformation plan" for the country.

On Monday Hollande reportedly asked Macron to back his re-election and he refused; which precipitated the departure.

At the moment, the French election is seen as wide open.
