An ECB spokesman says Nowotny's views are his own and don't represent the view of the governing council.

Earlier, Nowotny sent the euro to 1.2375 from 1.2330 after saying the ECB will end asset buys this year.

The euro dropped to 1.2327 from 1.2355 on the headline.
