Canadian manufacturing sentiment improves

  • Prior was 55.5
  • Best reading in six years
  • New orders best since Nov 2013
  • Job creation best since March 2011

The acceleration "reflected a steeper rise in new work and greater job creation, alongside another robust increase in production volumes," according to Markit. "Higher levels of client spending encouraged a sustained rebound in input buying and inventory building across the manufacturing sector. However, strong demand for inputs contributed to rising raw material prices in April, with cost inflation accelerating to its fastest since May 2014."

The release highlighted energy as a driver but also showed that it was more broad based as well with traditional manufacturers upbeat.
