Details from the August 2016 US industrial production data report 15 September 2016

  • Prior 0.7%. Revised to 0.6%

  • Capacity utilisation 75.5% vs 75.7% exp. Prior 75.9%

  • Manufacturing output -0.4% vs -0.3% exp m/m. Prior 0.5%. Revised to 0.4%

Not the hottest numbers we've ever seen. Strip out cars and parts and production was -0.5% vs 0.5% in July. Utilities did most of the damage.

The capacity utilisation is perhaps the main story within these numbers as it still shows that there's a lot of slack at factories.

US capacity utilisation

The bad news means not a jot for the dollar which touched a new high of 102.69 just before the data.
