The Speaker of the UK's lower House of Commons is making headlines again

Today's Sunday Telegraph reports that John Bercow, had told students in Reading on 3 Feb that

"Personally, I voted to remain. I thought it was better to stay in the European Union than not."

He said this was "partly for economic reasons - being part of a big trade bloc - and partly because I think we're in a world of power blocs.

"I think for all the weaknesses and deficiencies of the European Union, it's better to be part of that big power bloc in the world than thinking you can act as effectively on your own."

He also said immigration was a good thing and expressed concern Labour had not done more to strike a "very clear, resonant Remain note".

Whilst being generally considered to have presided over the recent Brexit bill debates with the required impartiality there is a lot of media attention currently on Bercow, particularly in light of his recent outburst voicing opposition to President Trump addressing Parliament on his UK state visit.

This latest news is getting over-hyped, as is the fashion with all things Brexit, but Bercow is definitely in the Marmite Boy category for MPs and public alike. You either love or loathe and he's never been far from the headlines.

Note: The Speaker of the House of Commons chairs debates in the Commons Chamber and the holder of this office is an MP who has been elected by other MPs.

He/She is the chief officer and highest authority of the House of Commons and must remain politically impartial at all times. During debates the Speaker keeps order and calls MPs to speak.

The Speaker also represents the Commons to the Monarch, the Lords and other authorities and chairs the House of Commons Commission.
