Problems reported globally, focused on Asia and Europe

Russia was hardest hit but the massive ransomware attack on Friday that led to disruptions in UK hospitals and elsewhere.

Researchers from Avast said they had observed 126,534 ransomware infections in 99 countries, with Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan the top targets.

The code evidently originated from NSA spy code known as "Eternal Blue" that was leaked last month by a group of hackers.

Aside from the disruption was the scope of the attack. Factories were shut down and passengers on German railways took photos of signs at stations demanding ransom. It highlights a threat to the global economy that was previously only theoretical.
