BERLIN (MNI) – Germany Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble supports
his French counterpart Christine Lagarde to take over the helm of the
International Monetary Fund following the resignation of Dominique
Strauss-Kahn, according to a press report.

“With Christine Lagarde…Europe would have the best chance of
occupying this position again,” Schaeuble told the German weekly Bild am
Sonntag (BamS) in an interview published Sunday.

Lagarde is “excellently qualified” for the job, the minister said
in the interview.

Meanwhile, the German weekly Der Spiegel reported over the weekend
that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had already told Eurogroup Chairman
Jean-Claude Juncker last Thursday that she would support Lagarde for the
top job at the IMF.
