At a panel discussion sponsored by the Brookings Institution

Attendees include a (not sure what the collective noun is for this) collection of former Federal Reserve officials ... like:

  • Joseph Gagnon, a former Fed staffer, now at the Peterson Institute
  • Julia Coronado, chief economist at Graham Capital Management
  • Jon Faust, a professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University, former adviser to Yellen
  • Donald Kohn, 40 years at the Fed, finishing as vice chairman
  • They say there will be no rate hike in September ... cite that the global economic outlook has worsened since the July FOMC meeting

Kohn said two things would make him hesitate to hike rates in September:

  • Very low inflation
  • Low market expectations of a September move due to recent market volatility
