Japan's eateries see a jump in sales and traffic

Not something we usually touch on but there's not much else going on right now. Japan's restaurants saw a 5.9% rise in total y/y sales in July, following a 2.0% gain in June.

Fast food sales were up 9.8% vs 4.8% in June and Western style restaurants saw the biggest jump at 14.9% vs 5.9% prior. Take-aways and 'others' gained while there were falls in Japanese and noodle bars.

Family restaurant sales rose 3.8% while fine dining posted the biggest gain at 7.0% vs 2.8% prior. Some pub owners were left crying into their beer trays as sales continued to decline. Japanese styled pubs led that, while beer halls posted their first rise in 3 months.

Overall foot fall was up 3.5% vs 0.5% prior.

Adam has recently been following some US restaurant data and it can be a good indicator of consumer trends.

One of the best meals I had in Japan was at a Japanese BBQ gaff in Osaka.

Truly scrumptious
