Round 1 of the French election is all over bar a few decimal points to the right of the important bit

Latest (official French counting, just over 95% counted):

  • Macron 23.77%
  • Le Pen 21.7%

Round 2, the final, is on May 7. How's it looking?

Polls, which have done a good job in forecasting the round 1 result, have Macron firmly in the lead, with around 62% against 38% for Le Pen (different polls have different numbers, but there is an approximate 60/40 split giver or take a point or so):

  • Fillon endorsed Macron when Fillon conceded defeat in round 1
  • Melenchon has yet to officially concede
  • Turnout figures also suggest an uphill battle for L e Pen (Le Pen would benefit from a lower turnout)

Two weeks is a long time in politics, though, so while Macron is in the box seat, its not over.

Note, legislative elections will come in June, and these will be even more interesting. but, that's for another day ...

The only two left ...
