Details from the December 2015 US personal income and spending data report 1 February 2016

  • Prior 0.3%
  • Personal spending 0.0% vs 0.1% exp m/m. Prior 0.3%. revised to 0.5%
  • Real personal spending 0.1% vs 0.2% exp m/m. prior 0.3%. Revised to 0.4%
  • Personal savings rate 5.5% vs 5.3%

Income is a tick better than expected while spending misses, although note the higher revisions. There's no records being broken here and this area has been the laggard of the US recovery.

What is news is that savings are at the highest for 3 years. There is spare money about but it's being stuck under the mattresses rather than going into the shop tills
