Harper's Conservatives lose big on election night

The Canadian Press reports that Stephen Harper will resign as leader of the Conservative Party but remain as an MP. His finance minister Joe Oliver lost his seat.

Harper was personally unpopular in Canada and that's probably what cost is party. With a different leader they may have fared better but Harper spent the last 10 year marginalizing anyone in his party who was a rival so there are few strong candidates to replace him.

In any case, baring some kind of disaster, Trudeau will be Prime Minister for the next four years.
