FT with an interview with Jens Weidmann

  • It is not unusual for politicians to have opinions on mon pol but we are independent
  • The ECB has to deliver on its price stability mandate and thus expansionary mon pol stance is appropriate
  • Stance is appropriate regardless of different views about specific measures

Poor old Jens is between a rock and a hard place. His views on how far the ECB should go with policy are well know but he's being put in the middle of a fight brewing between Germany and the ECB. He looks to have chosen his side, which is right considering his position as ECB governing council member.

Get the popcorn folks, the Schauble/Draghi meeting could be a good one.
